Tyre Weld (and similar puncture repair aerosols).
Powerchairs, Disabled drivers vehicles, wheelchairs and scooters all suffer punctures. Tubed tyres as fitted to most scooters and powerchairs (and wheelchairs) suffer many more.

Personally being paralysed from the chest down, a powerchair user and a driver I wouldn't want to be without one or another puncture repair solution as it means I could be stranded at 2am in some strange wet town with no means of rescue...   Powerchair Tyre Pressures What should they be and why?

Personally I think the best solution for the puncture problem goes like this:

  • Run flat tyres! Costly, not available in every tyre size but you can just drive your car or van home, punctures do not matter!  Unfortunately not an option on a wheelchair.

  • Tyre Seal. This stuff is added to all your tyres BEFORE you have a puncture. You do nothing. It seals them before the tyre goes flat. And it really works. Much cheaper than the tyres above and "almost" as good. Personally I would even add this stuff to the Run Flat tyres too. Belt and braces... Do all your cars, vans, wheelchairs today while you remember!

  • And the subject of this page the Tyre Weld (or similar product) that is very cheap and is added if you get a puncture afterwards...

Its only the third best solution. But the cheapest and the easiest and better than nothing when you are stuck on a deserted motorway at 2am its a godsend.

The problem is that it may or may not do the trick. Its not guaranteed or as good at sealing the leak as the Tyre Seal is. Or obviously its not as good as the Run Flat tyres are. But it pays to have one!

It works in tubed tyres (which are way more puncture prone -- think balloon!) but not as well as it works in tubeless tyres which are less likely to require it.

I have had success with it in tubed tyres, and in tubeless ones as a long term motorcyclist and as a guy that has relied on the stuff for 25 years until I fitted run flat tyres to my van and tubeless tyres on my power wheelchair!

There are lots of different manufacturers. Tyre weld works and was the first (I think) and I can recommend it. As for the others then they may be equally good but I cannot guarantee it!

In a vehicle that has a puncture this stuff really upsets the tyre repair guys... They wont want to clean it up for a repair and may try to tell you it cant be fixed. It can and its easily washed out if they have the patience!

These cans are available in many sizes. The small ones are easily taped or cable tied to a powerchair for the day you need it. You wont regret it! Every wheelchair, powerchair and vehicle that is used by a disabled person needs at least one solution to the puncture problem.

On wheelchairs and powerchairs solid or foam tyres (or "green" tyres) or whatever manufacturer you choose are all yet another solution but in all cases these tend to give a very jarring ride. That air was put into tyres for good reason! In addition they are harder to push, or wear out batteries faster, and they don't generally do much for tyre longevity either... Best avoided where possible.

On my own powerchairs I have replaced the wheels with different ones that allow me to fit stronger less puncture prone tubeless tyres. These combined with the tyre seal offer almost guaranteed puncture protection.
